St. Barnabas Scholarship

Thy word is lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalms 119: 105

Since 1989, each year, St. Barnabas UMC has given scholarships to deserving students. On June 30, 1988, Raymond Elliott generously started the scholarship trust fund that has made these scholarships possible. It was his vision that through you, I hope to extend my influence and your influence for good to many generations yet to come. He established that the scholarship committee should meet each year on (or near) April 1 to choose both the number of scholarships and the recipients. He also determined that the scholarships each year are to be given only from the earnings of the trust fund.

The St. Barnabas Scholarship Committee has six members including the senior pastor. Each of the five members that is selected from the congregation serves for a term of five years with one member rotating off the committee each year as a new one joins it.

Through 2007, the St. Barnabas Scholarship Committee has given $40,080.00 to 135 scholarship recipients. These recipients are listed below.

POWER OF ONE PROGRAM

And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying......Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more. His master said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.
Matthew 25: 20 -21

Each year the scholarships come from only the earnings on the Scholarship Trust Fund. In 2005, the St. Barnabas Scholarship Committee started its annual Power of One fundraiser to enable the increase of the Scholarship Trust Fund. Each year in May on Senior Sunday, each person in the congregation is encouraged to donate one dollar that will stay in the trust fund indefinitely, providing more earnings each year for more scholarships in the future. This is one of the best investments that one could ever make. Each one dollar that is donated is never spent but continues to invest, indefinitely, in the education of our youth and their contributions to our community and to our world.
