1971
Discussions began in the Fort Worth Area Council of Churches to seek an ecumenical venture.
1972
Discussions continued with the location of such a venture pinpointed in Arlington and the two denominations represented would be United Methodist and Presbyterian.
1974
Metropolitan Board of Mission bought 8 acres of farmland in southwest Arlington. (about $75,000)
1975
After several years of discussions, committee presentations and covenant writings, approval was given by both affiliations.
1977
June
The Metropolitan Board of Missions, with United Methodists and Presbyterians on the committee, met and selected the family to be named St. Barnabas. It was so named because of the similarity of the mission in southwest Arlington to Barnabas’. Barnabas means “son of encouragement”. Rev. Weldon Haynes moved to southwest Arlington to organize our family.
  July3 Forty-seven people attended a picnic in front of the farm house. The farm house was soon renovated for worship and other activities.
  Aug 7 One hundred sixty-two people came to worship and thirty families began our history.
  Oct 30 Constitution service for St. Barnabas was held with over 300 attending. One hundred sixty-five charter members were presented for membership and ten babies were baptized.
  Dec With a maximum capacity of only 150 people in the farm house, a building committee began discussions for a larger worship facility.
1978 Jan Church conference approved the master site plan.
  July Groundbreaking occurred for the sanctuary/fellowship hall with kitchen, storage, restrooms, nursery and 100 capacity parking lot for our growing family.
1979 May 27 First service was held in the new sanctuary with a total of 411 in attendance.
  Oct Consecration service was held for the new sanctuary.
1980 April Second building committee began planning for the much needed educational space.
1983
Ground breaking on educational wing. Several unrelated events in the United Methodist and Presbyterian Churches’ hierarchy occurred that began to see the eventual demise of the ecumenical St. Barnabas.
1984
Consecration on 6,800 sq. ft. education wing took place.
1986
After several years of diligent effort on the part of many within our St. Barnabas family, the Covenant Relations Committee’s proposals were rejected and the relationship between the two denominations in southwest Arlington would be dissolved. We are now St. Barnabas United Methodist Church.
1988
Enlargement of parking areas.
1989
Temporary buildings were put in place to give more educational space.
1990
Mission statement adopted
1991
Handbells purchased and bell choirs began forming.
1992
Building committee established to look at long-range building plans.
1996
Building campaign began for funds to build family life center, and renovation of sanctuary.
1997
Construction began on Family Life Center and renovation of sanctuary. Internet website developed.
1998
Family Life Center opened.
1999
Sanctuary and education wing renovation completed. New piano purchased.
2000
Parking lot improvements made.
2001
New handbells purchased. EEC program began. New playground equipment installed.
2002
25th Anniversary celebration. 12 passenger van purchased. Facility Needs Study Committee formed.
2005
Outside parking lot lighting installed. Old temporary buildings sold.
2006
New paraments (including banners, altar cloth, pulpit hanging and stoles) are finished. Church conference approves a building campaign to build a parking lot, stand-alone building (Barnabas Hall), a new 10,000 sq. ft. education building, renovation of the sanctuary and updating of other buildings with carpet and paint.
2007
Purchased new LED sign. “Expanding the Kingdom of God…Together” Capital Building campaign begins. New parking lot built.
2008
Barnabas Hall building finished. Ground breaking for new education building.
2009
May Consecration service held for Barnabas Hall, new education building and sanctuary renovation. August Allen sanctuary organ purchased and installed.
